Inside the project
Client brief
Backacia is an online platform for construction professionals - contractors, project owners, local authorities and associations - that makes it easy to buy and sell second-hand building materials and equipment. By driving reuse, Backacia cuts down the waste of one of the most resource-hungry sectors and pulls the building industry into a circular-economy model.
Launched in 2016, the start-up was looking from day one for a technical partner able to imagine and build a robust marketplace, absorb its growth, and keep evolving it over time without a re-platforming - from the product catalogue and its business-specific attributes all the way to ordering, payment and logistics flows.
Our approach
Between 2016 and 2025, we supported Backacia end-to-end: design, development, hosting and managed operations of the marketplace and its internal tools.
1. Initial build (2016 - 2018). Functional design of the B2B marketplace, data model and architecture, then development of the core modules: product sheets with construction-specific attributes (materials, dimensions, availability, location, status), professional buyer journey and checkout flow, vendor and catalogue management, multi-role back-office for the Backacia team.
2. Continuous evolutions (2018 - 2025). Sprint after sprint, we extended the product surface (new categories, batch listings, transport and pickup logistics), shipped automations for the Backacia team (follow-ups, transaction tracking, accounting exports), wired up payment and logistics integrations, and iterated on UX to smooth the journey on both the buyer and seller sides.
3. Hosting and managed operations. Throughout the engagement, our team handled the platform's hosting plus corrective and evolutive maintenance, staying available for traffic peaks and emerging technical topics.
The project today
Launched in 2016, Backacia.com now powers 500+ construction projects and counts more than 2,000 professional customers. Around it, the Backacia team has built a full offering covering PEMD diagnostics, circular-economy advisory and the resale marketplace itself.
After nearly a decade of partnership and successive evolutions, in 2025 we hand over a mature marketplace and a well-tooled ecosystem to the Backacia team, who can now keep developing it fully autonomously.
